Customer

Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12)

Challenge

Y-12 performs a vital role in the National Nuclear Security Administration’s mission to support the Department of Defense’s (DoD) strategic nuclear deterrence program. Because the site houses technologies critical to national security, Y-12 requires the development of classified game-based, augmented reality, and virtual reality learning environments for the tactical training of facilities security personnel.

Approach

HDIAC identified industry, U.S. government, and DoD organizations experienced in developing classified modelling and simulation (M&S) platforms for tactical training. Selection criteria included organizational capabilities and past performance. HDIAC identified eight relevant entities performing this work, including the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, the DoD Modeling and Simulation Center Coordination Office, and Cubic Advanced Learning’s Integrated Training Systems—all of which indicated willingness to work with Y-12 in the development of site-specific M&S for implementation into training protocols.

Value

HDIAC’s technical inquiry service allowed Y-12 to implement enhanced tactical training measures to ensure the protection of national critical nuclear infrastructure. This expedited inquiry process minimized the time, effort, and resources required for game-based tactical training, allowing Y-12 program management to begin work within weeks of the inquiry request. Y-12 program managers recognized HDIAC as a value-added resource, saving the DOE’s nuclear security enterprise time and money.
